REPORTS TO: Director of Quality Assurance
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt
DURATION: 3 months
SCHEDULE: Days, full time. (Subject to change according to business needs)

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Summer Intern will work in Idaho Milk Products State-of-the-art Quality Assurance laboratory. The Intern will learn the standard methods performed in a large dairy processing facility, including the procedures required to meet regulatory and customer requirements. In addition to the day-to-day QA testing, the Intern will conduct special projects related to continuous improvement efforts. Projects will be selected based on the skills and education of the Intern and will be assigned based on the business needs at the beginning of the internship. At the completion of the summer, interns will be expected to present their results to the executive leadership team. Additional internship opportunities may be available outside of a summer internship, depending on business needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Performs routine lab testing and acts as a back-up for existing lab personnel.
• Works with Production and Research and Development departments on special projects and troubleshooting efforts.
• Develops laboratory methods for physical, chemical, and microbiological evaluation of dairy products.
• Works with the QA Department to develop and improve the quality management systems.
• Operates laboratory equipment such as HPLC’s, FTIR/NIR Spectrometers, Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, Nitrogen Combustion and Kjeldahl Protein Analyzers, and water activity meters.
• Follows instructions with rigor and discipline.
• Meticulous recordkeeping to document all aspects of project work.
• Prepares presentations and reports to communicate results.
• Performs other duties and projects as assigned.

Physical Requirements:
• Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
• Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.
• Walking: occasional moving about on foot to accomplish some tasks.
• Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Includes activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
• Subject to up to at least 92db’s Must be able to lift up to 50lbs occasionally.
• Standing for long periods of time.

Qualifications

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
• Required: A minimum of 1 year of coursework toward a Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science, Dairy Science, Food Engineering, or another related field.
Experience, Skills, and Abilities:
• Experience solving problems, analyzing information, highlighting relevant information, and suggesting appropriate actions.
• Experience with Good Lab Practices and basic lab techniques.
• Capable writer and oral communicator. Able to write reports, minutes, action plans and SOP’s.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively to and meet defined deadlines and goals on time.
• Highly self-motivated individual comfortable working individually and be able to manage multiple tasks and projects efficiently within the context of a fast-paced, busy environment.
• Ability to demonstrate excellent skills in MS Office skills including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint.
• Ability to write reports and prepare/deliver presentations.
• Strong skills in organization, prioritization, and time management.
• Creative, self-starter that enjoys building systems from the ground up.
• Ability to establish good relations with all levels of employees.
