The Twin Falls Fire Department covers about 70 square miles and responds to emergencies ranging from fires to hazardous materials incidents. It employs 48 staff members, including a Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, and multiple firefighters. The department operates several specialized teams for rope rescue, hazardous materials, trench rescue, and wildland firefighting.
Firefighter Role: Under supervision, firefighters learn fire suppression techniques, train in emergency response, and assist with public education and prevention programs. They maintain equipment and participate in emergency planning.
Qualifications
To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, hold a valid driver's license, and have NREMT or Idaho State EMT certification.
Additionally, candidates must have strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and the physical capacity to perform demanding tasks. They must also reside within 40 miles of the city center within 15 months of employment and pass the Fire Department’s skills test, achieving IFSAC Firefighter Level 1 certification within a designated time.
The selection process includes several phases: a written assessment, a physical fitness test, oral board interviews, and a final interview with the Fire Chief. Additionally, successful candidates must undergo a fitness-for-duty psychological evaluation, a background check, a medical exam, and a drug screening before receiving a conditional offer of employment.
Selection Process:
1. Written Assessment (October 18, 2024): Candidates must complete a 3-hour written exam testing comprehension, mechanical understanding, and mathematics. A $10 fee is required to participate.
2. Physical Fitness Assessment (October 19, 2024): Selected candidates will perform physical tasks such as push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, and a timed two-mile run. Additionally, they must complete departmental skill tests such as ladder climbing, hose carrying, and dummy dragging.
3. Oral Board Interview (October 19-20, 2024): Candidates passing the initial tests will be interviewed by a panel.
4. Fire Chief Interview (October 21, 2024): Top candidates will be interviewed by the Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief.
5. Fitness-for-Duty Psychological & Background Check (October 24-November 1, 2024): Finalists undergo a remote psychological evaluation and an online background check.
6. Medical Exam and Drug Screen (November 2024): As a final step, candidates must pass a medical examination and drug test.
